'Endodontic' means within the tooth itself. Your tooth is made up of three layers. The outer layer of the tooth is called the enamel. The second layer, the bulk of the tooth is the dentin. The third layer, the pulp consists of nerve, lymph and blood vessels. During root canal therapy, the third layer, the pulp is removed and replaced with a rubbery material called gutta percha.
